Hoboken Philharmonic Jazz Quartet
Jazz / BeBop
Neither a quartet, nor from Hoboken, the locally based Hoboken Philharmonic Jazz Quartet started out consisting of six members, mostly high schoolers, although the lineup has changed over time. The group plays everything from early bop tunes to Latin jazz to funk rock, although recently "Hoboken" has focused in on jazz and blues from the late 40s through the 1950's. The band claims their main influences as Clifford Brown, Cannonball and Nat Adderly, early Miles Davis, and Art Blakey. Stylistically, the group centers on improvisation, specifically trading short riffs and on unique melody solos. Since its initial creation in the fall of 2007, Hoboken has played in numerous gigs and performances, ranging from charity shows at a children's summer camp to cocktail parties, art shows, and club dates. Look for their debut CD, soon.
